cross platform gaming of TF2 and the beginning of the war against Microsoft

IGN has news of actual cross platform gameplay (Xbox360 & PC, no PS3...yet, if ever) of Team Fortress 2 in an interview ---actually a preview of a preview--- with devs and the beginnings of the dispute with the mighty Microsoft (see Next-Gen) about the implementation of Live accounts and the fees they will entail through tie-ins with Windows' / Vista's Live gaming.

Valve is clearly siding with Epic and the same issues confronted with the Gears of Wars map pack: Annex for the Xbox360 and that has been released to the community for added $$$ in the Live coffers.

Way back in November Turtle Rock Studios, (the makers of the original Counter Strike) announced the development of Left 4 Dead a co-op fps zombie title that uses the source engine.

The team at left4dead411.com (fansite) visited the Valve studios and offer an in depth preview of the game here.

on the horizon

  • PlanetQuake gets a hands-on (never liked that expression) of Quake Wars
  • Painkiller engine is gonna be used for wolfenstein-ish's Necrovision
  • Unreal 3 / 2007 (yes they're having name issues) is gonna have a plot ...think Gears of War crashing a tournament

WarCry previews Huxley

Warcry reminds us with their preview from the GDC that Huxley is the next (think Planetside) massive-fps but what has piqued my interest is...

The key difference is that this game takes the "unlocks" of games like Battlefield 2142 to the next level. Like most MMOs, players pick a class (Enforcer, Avenger or Phantom) and then equip themselves. In more of an FPS-bent though, their typical FPS skills are linked to the equipment their character has earned. Each piece of equipment provides the character with additional ability slots, up to a maximum of five per battle. Players then must carefully select which abilities to bring in.

These can be anything from sprint, to an anti-headshot device that prevents those pesky one-shot kills. Others include things players may often take for granted in normal FPS games, like one that allows players to see how many hit-points their enemies have left.

Crysis demo coming

the shooter that is gonna try to revive (too few and far between) the genre on the PC --- Crysis has news of their demo/beta (mp and sp) on the way...

Portal and Team Fortress 2 bundled to HL2:ep2

some news

Half-Life 2 (HL2): ep 2 is gonna be late...

  • could be either because they are taking this for a simultaneous release on all platforms or because they are making this a doozy of a game bundling Team Fortress 2 and Portal into the mix

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. which has been in development since 2001 is about to be shipped to stores for the end of March and immediately comes into contention for 2007 game of the year.

The shooter takes place in the environmental mess of a radioactive Chernobyl (yes, they learn nothing from the first disaster and experience a second meltdown/explosion within the confines of an area measuring 4kmx4km. Given such a vast world to explore, the storyline forces the quest to follow a scripted and linear evolution of your character's identity crisis as you pick up new items to add to your inventory that allow you to explore new areas otherwise made inaccessible giving the game a certain RPG feel.

for part one in an interview with the game's lead developer head on over to CVG

ps3 buys some peace of mind

why i got a ps3 ...reason #37

the option to contribute to folding@home

---gives the ps3 owners something to feel less guilty about when splurging on a gaming system ---as if any gamer would actually sacrifice any of their (oh still so fragile) bandwith

what i will remember of 2006

i guess its the announcement that the CPL is making a game:

Severity is a multiplayer
first person shooter (FPS)
focusing on team-versus-team
and one-versus-one play modes.
Additionally, the game offers
unprecedented support for gamers
worldwide playing in online and live competitions
both casually and professionally.

“Severity will be the first videogame
conceived from the ground up
to ensure the growth and appeal
of multiplayer game
competitions worldwide,” said Tom Mustaine,
Director of Game Development at the CPL’s new studio.

Severity is built on technology
created by developer id Software™
and includes enhanced tournament support,
spectator modes, as well as detailed player
and tournament statistics tracking.
By leveraging the enthusiastic community
and practical experiences of the CPL,
Severity is uniquely positioned to set
new standards while raising the bar
for competitive multiplayer games.

should be interesting
but will it be good enough
i mean u still have people playing CS 1.6 (50, 000+)
most of the gamers are still scattered across so many games

they are hoping to find a way that will get all gamers playing the same game
from an entity that is expected to understand what gaming is all about
they are treading on what could be some potentially thin ice

if this idea bombs...
they will have lost any of the cred they may have gathered in all those years of hard work promoting gaming and the spirit of competition which is why i am betting that after all this time and energy in the CPL and CAL to let it slip away quite so easily

in the meantime visit here regularly i guess

Voodoo is scared of consumer E3

just as Vista is going gold

Voodoo shows concern for a consumer version of the E3

but i would expect something along the lines of a world tour tie in some major gaming tournaments to this and it might take off (hell, make it like the WWF if you have to, let's just get some good games out there)

BF 2142 is coming

the Battlefield franchise (yeah the one that has us always drooling over the potential despite the bugs ) is coming out with their latest installment Battlefield 2142 and mostly seems to run on the same engine as BF2

"The king of all ground combat, though,
is the massive bipedal mech;
the beta was limited to only one mech
on the battlefield at any given time,
and it only spawned in the very middle.
Getting one is tough,
but the mech is a massive benefit
when used properly.
One player moves the mech
and has access to both a rapid-fire cannon
and radar-seeking missiles,
while a second player sits behind the first and controls
a chaingun turret mounted on the roof
and can pivot in a full circle.
Granted, the mech is slow and too big
for most urban combat, but in the field,
it is one of the biggest reasons that you will run scrambling for cover
"

"It's a great departure from some of the vehicle-centric
gameplay found its predecessors and gives a great deal
more power to the infantryman
while still giving vehicles a distinct purpose
"
