Insurgency mod for HL2

Fumbling through the pages of PC Gamer's holiday 2005 issue (#144) I stumbled upon the mod section which revealed to me the development of a modern infantry combat mod for Half-Life 2 called Insurgency.

The mod is currently done with accepting beta testing applicants and is expected to be released in the late summer/early fall of 2006. Insurgency which will be known as INS is hoping to:

"simulate the challenges of infantry combat on the modern battlefield" "Advance through the chain of command as you gain online combat experience that opens opportunities to command a fireteam, squad/section, or even your entire platoon. It will take strategic skill and teamwork to overcome the challenging online opponents during battles set in real and fictional locations around the globe."

So far the conflicts will be taking place in Croatia (Yugoslav National Army-JNA vs. Croatian Army/Hrvatska Vojska-HV) or in Iraq (United States Marine Corps-USMC, British Paras, Fedayeen Saddam-Republican Guards, and Iraqi Insurgents) and four game types will be available to choose from:

"Firefight -- Designed for up to 16 players. This is a duel between a Fireteam vs. Fireteam or a Squad vs. Squad. They must advance through the map and take the subsequent objectives. Reinforcement comes further back which could hinder an advance. Once a team has taken all objectives or eliminated the opposing team, they are victorious. The players then swap sides to prove is the best all around.

Battle -- Designed for up to 64 players. Both teams clash as they struggle to control all the objectives. Depending on how well the team performs, the battle could easily put you on the defensive or if you execute your strategy and tactics well, you will be on the offensive to close with and destroy the enemy. In order to earn victory, you must control all objectives or eliminate the enemy once they have no more reinforcements available.

Push -- Designed for up to 64 players. One team is on the offensive and the other must put up a stalwart effort in order to hold their ground. The objectives are layed out so that one at a time must be captured. Once that objective has been taken, the attacking team then continues on to the subsequent objectives until all have been taken or run out of troops and reinforcements.

Strike -- Designed for up to 64 players. Another attack and defend scenario where objectives are layed out with no place for the defenders to withdraw and regroup. They must hold the objective as until either team can no longer put up a fight."

PC Gamer calls this mod "a gritty, dangerous, slow-paced re-creation of infantry combat" so don't expect a frenzy of spray and pray gameplay as tactics are essential to survival.

What has defintely piqued my interest is the:

"No Bullshit Heads Up Display (NOBSHUD) -- Only the information that you need to know will be displayed when you need to know it. You will know where your objectives and where your leaders are at all times. No flashy graphics or other distractions to take your attention away from the action at hand."

which means that no crosshairs will be onscreen littering your field of vision as you will be forced to use the iron sights on your rifle while you duck in and out of cover.

Respawning will be done in waves of reinforcements (set to the "Platoon Commander"/server admin's discretion:

"Dynamic Map Configuration System -- This feature allows server-sided changes to the configuration of maps. There is the ability to change what teams are fighting, which uniforms, reinforcement numbers, fire support available, squad configuration, among other properties."

Goddamn this looks good, (especially because its free).

Stay tuned.

Need a boost?

While everyone knows coffee makes you more alert/wired and is a must for any serious gamer an alternative has surfaced for a while from the makers of Jolt Cola as they have created a mint flavoured caffeine energy gum. Two pieces of gum, they claim, is the equivalent of one cup of coffee:
"Jolt chewing gum contains caffeine
PLUS Guarana and Ginseng to give you maximum energy"

they even found a military purpose:

"The first thing we did was send
about 25,000 free packs of Jolt Gum overseas"

Who knows it may give you that edge you've been looking for during your endless hours of online combat.

Ghost Recon 3: Advanced Warfighter

Back on December 1st an irc dev chat took place giving a little more details on what GR3: Adavanced Warfighter has in store for us fellow gamers:

"In singleplayer and coop you will fight up to 20 enemy AI, plus both air and ground vehicles"

"A demo is scheduled for release in the beginning of 2006, before the release of the full game"

"GRAW will support Pixel Shader 3.0, and effects like HDR (High Dynamic Range). "Yes, and for the record: We were the first company to release a game with pixel shaders in. we know these kinds of features like the back of our hands. GRAW PC features HDR lighting, soft shadows, deferred lighting, normal mapping on everything, and an incredibly dynamic and destructable environment"

"There is no player switching in the single player mode; if you die, you die"

"Coop is one of the main focuses for GRAW PC. The tactical approach is balanced with coop in mind"

" On the game engine: "It's our own Diesel Engine, version 6.0. It's a next-gen engine that we've developed over time in collaboration with nVidia, ATI and also of late Ageia to support the latest and greatest PC hardware features"

"light and color changes to clearly indicate the mood of a scene. Before a fight, things look smooth, but as the bullets start flying and things get dangerous, the light changes to a more cold and "hard" hue. We use that in game as well, to emphasize the situation"

"Dead bodies will remain on screen, and not disappear after some time elapses"

"Content art, sound, technology and gameplay is entirely unique for the PC version. The entire PC version is made exclusively for the PC, and stand alone from the console versions in terms of gameplay. I'll go a bit further on this...First off: The tactical layer of the PC game is much more advanced than the console approach. We have a realtime 3d view of the battle field where you as a squad leader can see the action and plan it real time. This to be able to set up the best tactical approach as the combat and pre combat changes. Adding to this we have individual control of 3 team mates and other support troops. This is to design complex flanking and attacking patterns both on the fly and through your tactical interface...for both stealth, position in covers and shooting positions. This is what we call the advanced leaning system which allows 8 way leaing, sliding and even diving into cover"
